Abstract:

Given the current situation and knowledge of the importance of green economy and the lack of green economy promoters in the targeted countries, the main goal of EGEA is to promote “green” thinking and sustainable behaviour at all levels of education in three Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan, Nepal and India) endorsing the role of Higher Education Institutions as catalysts of change. Although the concept of green economy is progressing under the European environmental policy targets and objectives 20102050, changing the way that Kyrgyz, Nepalese and Indian societies manage the interaction of the environmental and economic domains requires actions across all sectors including education. Green economy is a concept rather unexplored in most parts of Asia.

Based on previous cooperation and experiences, the consortium believes that in order to guarantee the sustainability of green economy initiatives efforts should be deployed bottom-up and top-down approaches. The five main strategies include the development of modular programs that reinforce knowledge and practice on green economy to be integrated within existing or new programs in beneficiary HEIs; enhancement of lifelong learning through professional blended courses oriented to adult education in green economy and related areas; reinforcement of Public Affairs Departments and Marketing Units to facilitate the role HEIs as promoter of green behaviour in local society; the development of promotional campaigns and programs that foster green behaviour among students in schools and colleges.
